Norcross has said his original goal in life was to attend college and then return home to work on his family's farm in Tyronza, Arkansas. He went to college at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville with the goal of developing relationships with other people from around the state. He enrolled in the Sam Walton College of Business while at Arkansas and, after graduation, accepted a job in business to gain experience before returning to the family farm. Norcross joined FIS in 1988, several years after graduating from college. In addition to his current position at FIS, Norcross is also on the Board of Directors of five different companies, including the Guardian Life Insurance Company.

Amy Norcross, Gary's wife, also graduated from Arkansas-Fayetteville, from the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences with a degree in Journalism. The two were college sweethearts and were married soon after graduation. The couple has three children, two sons, and one daughter.

Gary and Amy have endowed a fund at the Walton College of Business for underrepresented students enrolled at Walton who demonstrate financial need. The Office of Diversity and Community at the University of Arkansas manages the fund.
