Disney Plus Day: What Is It and What Does It Mean for the Future of Disney Streaming

Drum roll please – subscribers, both current and new, are invited to join in the celebration of Disney’s first-ever Disney Plus Day.

To commemorate the anniversary of the Disney Plus streaming service, Disney recently announced the introduction of its first-ever annual Disney Plus Day. Slated for November 12, 2021, The Walt Disney Company’s CEO, Bob Chapek, describes this day by stating:

“This day of appreciation brings to life our mission to entertain, inform, and inspire fans and families around the globe through the power of unparalleled storytelling, and will become an annual tentpole to be amplified across our global businesses.”

While information about new content to come is still limited, we do know that this celebration will span across Disney, Marvel, National Geographic, Pixar, and Star Wars, and will include titles, such as:

  • Marvel’s blockbusters: Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings
  • Family-friendly movies: Jungle Cruise and Home Sweet Home Alone
  • Disney shorts: Olaf Presents, Frozen Fever, Feast, and Get a Horse!
  • Pixar’s latest short: Ciao Alberto
  • Five new episodes of National Geographic’s fan-favorite: The World According to Jeff Goldblum
  • Simpsons Disney Plus anniversary special: Simpsons in Plusavesary

Disney is also expected to celebrate Disney Plus Day at the Disney Parks and Resorts as well as offer special deals throughout the day at its online Disney store. There’s been no news about Disney Plus Day expanding into other Disney-held platforms, including ABC, Disney Channel, ESPN, ESPN Plus, Freeform, FX, and Hulu, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see details slowly emerging about some extra content on these platforms as well.

While this is great news for viewers craving new content, Disney Plus Day could be good for investors too. There’s no doubt that Disney will use this special anniversary to attract new subscribers. The latest figures show Disney Plus with 116 million subscribers, which is a slightly better than its anticipated 112 to 115 subscribership.

However, Disney Plus has quite a ways to go to reach global leaders, such as Netflix (214 million subscribers) and Amazon (200 million subscribers), but its success in just two years definitely makes the streaming platform a contender in the market.

Disney is not only hoping to boost membership in the United States, but Disney Plus Day also marks the streaming service’s expansion into the Asia-Pacific market, including Taiwan and South Korea followed by Hong Kong on November 16, 2021.

Certainly, the buzz around Disney Plus Day and the streaming service’s expansion into the Asia-Pacific market will generate more subscribers. The only questions that remain are how many subscribers can Disney capture and how will this boost in membership affect its stocks?
