How Record-Breaking Were Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Box Office Numbers?

The entertainment industry has been sitting on the edge of its seats in anticipation of what it will take to get moviegoers back into the theater in record numbers. The answer they’re looking for may be from another universe – the Marvel universe to be exact.
That’s right. The conglomerate’s release of the latest movie in the Spider-Man trilogy is breaking both domestic and worldwide records.
After just 10 days on the big screen, Spider-Man: No Way Home became the biggest domestic movie of the year, raking in a total of $813.9 million globally, surpassing the latest James Bond hit No Time to Die, whose worldwide earnings rose to $774 million.

Globally during this same 10-day period, however, Spider-Man: No Way Home fell short of the number one spot, falling behind two Chinese-made films, The Battle at Lake Changjin, which earned over $902 million, and Hi, Mom, which earned $882 million.
Now, thanks in part to the holiday weekend, Spider-Man has now surpassed the $1 billion threshold, officially making it the number one movie around the world in 2021.
Spider-Man: No Way Home isn’t just breaking post-pandemic records. Its opening weekend earned the second-highest domestic box office earnings of all time ($260 million), falling only behind Avengers: Endgame ($357 million). In fact, the newest Marvel hit is on the path to becoming one of the highest-earning movies of all time.

Marvel and its star-studded cast, including Tom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Zendaya, aren’t the only ones celebrating the film’s success. There’s no doubt that Hollywood as a whole is pleased to see moviegoers heading back into the theaters at not just pre-pandemic numbers, but record-breaking rates.
It’s hard to tell if this increased presence at the movie theater will last, especially with COVID’s omicron variant threatening to wreck communities around the globe. While the industry is likely to face several ups and downs over the next few months, the fact that millions of people were willing to head into the theater over the holidays is certainly a good sign that there is still plenty of life left in traditional movie theaters.
